Launch of revised edition “Britain’s Best Real Heritage Pubs” by Geoff Brandwood
Wednesday, 31st August, 2016 1.00 p.m. Woodman, New Canal Street, Digbeth, Birmingham B5 5LG
For anyone interested in pub interiors, the renowned CAMRA author Geoff Brandwood will be signing the new edition of Britain’s Best Real Heritage Pubs book at the historic Woodman pub in Birmingham.
This free event, taking place on Wednesday 31st August, will combine a talk on how to identify, conserve and preserve our treasured national heritage pubs with an author meet and greet book signing.
This book, which, is published by the Campaign for Real Ale, CAMRA, explores more than 260 pubs throughout the UK which have interiors of real historic significance – some of them stretching back a century or more.
Featured in the book, the Woodman was recently re-opened by Birmingham Inns, The Woodman is a Grade II listed building which was built in 1897 for Ansell’s Brewery. It’s a fine example of the tiled and terracotta pubs that used to line the streets of Birmingham. Both the Bar and Smoke Room are tiled throughout in Minton tiles and the bar counter and back fitting are practically intact.
Comprehensively revised from the 2013 edition, the book boasts updated information and over 650 top-quality new photographs. Among the 260 pubs, there are unspoilt country locals, Victorian drinking palaces and mighty roadhouses. The book has features describing how the pub developed, what’s distinctive about pubs in different parts of the country, how people a century ago could expect to be served drinks at their table, and how they used the pub for take-out sales in the pre-supermarket era. (Cover price £9.99)
